Memorable People
The people whose vision and engineering shaped Carter Wind Solutions and the technology behind our turbines.
Professor Tony Marmont
A British businessman, inventor and lifelong environmentalist, Tony Marmont was the driving force and financial backer behind Carter Wind Turbines. Through his company Beacon Energy, he acquired the rights to the Carter two-blade turbine technology, championing it as part of his decades-long mission to make renewable energy practical and affordable.
Marmont made his fortune in the family soft-drinks business, E Carter and Co Ltd, which he grew from a regional East Midlands manufacturer into the largest privately owned company in its sector. He then devoted his energy and wealth to sustainability, continually developing cheaper, cleaner solutions — including pioneering work to synthesise transport fuel by capturing carbon dioxide from the air and combining it with hydrogen.
He generously funded the launch of the Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST) at Loughborough University, where he served as a Visiting Professor and received an Honorary Doctorate in 1998. He was awarded The Energy Medal for Lifetime Achievement for his tireless campaigning for sustainable development. He passed away in 2024, days short of his 94th birthday, remembered for contributions that were consistently revolutionary and groundbreaking.

Farnborough
Steve has devoted more than 30 years to aerospace development, with particular expertise in aerospace vehicle design and structural analysis across both military and civil aerospace engineering programmes.
Throughout his career, Steve has worked with some of the world’s leading aerospace organisations, including Boeing, Airbus, British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce Aero Engines.
More recently, he has been involved in the new space race, contributing to major launch vehicle programmes including SLS and New Glenn.
Steve first joined forces with Professor Tony Marmont in 1992, when he became Chief Engineer at Carter Wind Turbines Ltd. He was rapidly promoted to Managing Director, and his close collaboration with Tony has continued ever since.
Steve acquired Carter Wind Turbines Ltd from Tony and has since championed the deployment of the technology in new markets and for a broader range of applications. Particular emphasis has been placed on niche opportunities and projects that deliver meaningful social and community benefits.
The technology has a proven operational track record spanning decades. By applying modern engineering design methods, advanced analytical tools, and contemporary manufacturing practices, Steve has further enhanced the understanding, performance, and application of the technology.
Drawing upon robust aerospace engineering principles, he has helped industrialise the product while maintaining its core strengths of safety, reliability, durability, and operational simplicity.
This combination of proven technology and modern engineering provides a strong foundation for the continued expansion of Carter Wind Turbines Ltd into new sectors and emerging markets.
