The Open Wind
Carter Wind Solutions, Ltd. develops a 300‑kW, two‑blade downwind horizontal‑axis turbine utilizing the NASA LS‑1 aerodynamic profile and a tilt‑down tubular tower for ground‑level maintenance access. The downwind rotor configuration enables the blades to undergo controlled aeroelastic bending and torsional compliance under high inflow conditions, passively shedding excess aerodynamic load. Because the rotor naturally aligns with the incoming wind (weathervaning), the system eliminates the need for a high‑mass upwind yaw‑retention gearbox, reducing structural loads, drivetrain complexity, and overall O&M requirements.
